Vitamin D – The Underrated Hormone
Vitamin D has long been underestimated. For decades, it was assumed that this vitamin, which is actually a hormone, was only relevant for our bones. Due to our ability to produce vitamin D ourselves through sunlight, it was also thought that vitamin D intake had no restrictions. However, as recent research shows, both assumptions turned out to be unjustified. Vitamin D interacts with almost all cells in the human body, not just those of the bones. Moreover, many scientific studies have confirmed that higher vitamin D levels have preventive potential in areas such as cardiovascular health, blood pressure, diabetes, depression, and the general aging process.

The Good Health Study Shows: Every Drop of Vitamin D Counts
The BIOGENA Good Health Study (GHS) with 1,377 Austrian participants once again made it clear that "every drop" of vitamin D counts – for the heart and vessels, our well-being, and our sleep.
Vitamin D supply: Normal is good, optimal is better.
29% better heart protection
25% better mental well-being and more confidence
11.1% more joy of life
9% better stress protection
5.7% more restful sleep
11.6% better sleep quality
Vitamin D: A Boost for the Heart
Science has long known about the protective effect of vitamin D on the heart and blood vessels. Further scientific support came from the BIOGENA Good Health Study, which showed: the higher the vitamin D level, the lower the cardiovascular risk. To assess the risk, the ASCVD index was used—a value predicting the likelihood of an acute cardiovascular event over the next ten years.
Vitamin-D-Status | ASCVD | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
50 nmol/l | 11,1 % | Statin therapy likely needed, cardiovascular investigations recommended. |
125 nmol/l | 8,7 % | ASCVD index reduced by 22%. |
150 nmol/l | 7,9 % | ASCVD index reduced by 29%. |
Tab. Je höher der Vitamin D-Spiegel, desto geringer das Herz-Kreislauf-Risiko.
Interpretation of the data
The Good Health Study data showed that the ASCVD value decreased from 11.1% (vitamin D deficiency) to 7.9% (optimal vitamin D supply), representing a 29% reduction. Many individuals with optimal vitamin D levels reached a lower ASCVD risk category where statin treatment was no longer necessary.
Vitamin D: Essential for Well-being and Sleep
A good vitamin D supply can benefit not only the cardiovascular system but also the psyche. People with a better vitamin D supply benefit from more joy of life (+11%), better mental well-being, more confidence (+25%), and better stress protection (9%).
People who are "on the sunny side of life" also sleep better. This is likely why people with a better vitamin D supply rarely struggle with falling asleep (-11.6%) and start the day more rested (+5.7%).

Vitamin D Supply in Austria: Rating "Poor"
Vitamin D is a hot topic, but still not fully recognized by everyone—and certainly not in everyone’s nutrient stores. The Good Health Study brings to light the dramatic supply situation among 1,377 Austrian participants:
Vitamin D status in Austria: improvement is urgently needed.

Final Facts
Diet and sunlight alone are insufficient for an optimal vitamin D level! Without supplementation, it is practically impossible to achieve adequate or, even better, optimal vitamin D levels.
Vitamin D should be on everyone’s mind and lips. Vitamin D receptors are not only found in bones but in almost every cell in the body, as shown by its preventive effects on the heart and psyche.
The public dosage recommendations are aimed at maintaining bone health alone, and according to the latest study data, they are insufficient even for that purpose. To achieve optimal levels, higher and individualized dosages are necessary.
The Vision of the BIOGENA Good Health Study
The 2021 BIOGENA Good Health Study with 1,377 participants aimed to provide a current snapshot of the health and nutrient status of the Austrian population and demonstrate that better micronutrient supply is rewarded with greater physical and mental well-being.
