What is L-glutamine – and what is it good for?
L-glutamine is one of the most abundant amino acids in the human body. In certain situations – such as physical stress, intense exercise, or an unbalanced diet – it becomes a key player in metabolism, cell regeneration, and maintaining inner balance.
L-glutamine belongs to the group of proteinogenic amino acids. That means it's involved in protein synthesis and is essential for many processes in the body. One standout fact: in blood plasma, L-glutamine is the most common free amino acid. It’s also highly concentrated in muscle cells, where it helps regulate cell volume and supports water storage inside the cells – a natural process that becomes particularly important during physical strain.
L-Glutamine dietary supplement – when the need increases in special situations
Whether it's intense workouts, infections, surgery, injuries, or mental stress – there are many life situations that can deplete your body’s glutamine levels. In times like these, your natural production or dietary intake may not be enough. Under stress, the body’s glutamine levels can drop by up to 50% – and the body doesn’t automatically replenish them.
That’s where targeted L-glutamine supplementation comes in. It provides the bioidentical L-form of the amino acid, which the body can absorb and use immediately.
L-glutamine benefits for athletes and active lifestyles
Do you train regularly, build muscle, or lead a physically active life? Then you already know how important optimal nutrient supply is. During muscle-building workouts, a lot of glutamine is released from the muscles into the bloodstream – which can lead to muscle mass loss over time. That’s why glutamine supplements are especially useful in sports: they help stabilize glutamine levels and support recovery.
L-glutamine in your diet – natural food sources
You also get glutamine from your diet – around 5 to 10 grams daily on average. Glutamine-rich foods include cheese, soybeans, peanuts, lentils, and beef. However, if you follow a strict diet or a vegan lifestyle, it might be more difficult to consume enough L-glutamine – especially if you also avoid nuts or soy. In this case, a L-glutamine dietary supplement can be a helpful addition.

Glutamine vs glutamate – what’s the difference?
People often ask: aren’t glutamine and glutamate the same thing? No – and the difference matters. L-glutamine is an amino acid, while glutamate is a salt of glutamic acid and is commonly used as a flavor enhancer in processed foods. Important: glutamate must be labeled as an additive – glutamine doesn’t, because it’s a natural part of many foods.
L-Glutamine supplements – when and how to take them
In addition to food sources, you can also take L-glutamine supplements when needed.
In addition to food sources, you can also take L-glutamine supplements when needed.
Not all glutamine products are the same. Depending on your lifestyle, one form might suit you better:
L-glutamine capsules – easy to take on the go, simple to dose
L-glutamine powder – flexible use, great for higher dosages
L-glutamine sticks – perfectly portioned, even without water
