Leaky gut: the phenomenon of increased intestinal permeability

The term “leaky gut” refers to increased permeability of the intestinal wall. Ideally, your gut lining acts like a protective barrier, allowing beneficial substances through while blocking harmful ones like toxins, undigested food particles, and pathogens. When this protective system weakens, these substances may enter the bloodstream — potentially triggering inflammation and a variety of health issues. Abdominal pain, bloating, digestive disorders, and even autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes may be associated. Although leaky gut syndrome is not yet officially recognized as a distinct medical condition, it is an increasingly discussed topic.

How does the intestinal mucosa work?

Your intestinal mucosa is a highly sophisticated barrier. It allows essential nutrients to pass through while keeping harmful substances out. It’s made up of a layer of epithelial cells, tightly connected by so-called “tight junctions,” which maintain the barrier function. These tight junctions can be imagined as bands holding the cells together. The epithelial cells also produce mucus, providing an additional physical barrier. Beneath this layer lies the gut’s immune system, which further supports the defense against harmful agents.

What can you do for leaky gut?

Diet and lifestyle play key roles in supporting gut health. Here are a few simple tips to strengthen your intestinal lining:

  • Avoid FODMAPs: These fermentable sugars — like fructose, lactose, and sorbitol — can be broken down by gut bacteria, producing gases that disrupt digestion.

  • Maintain a balanced diet: Reducing fat and sugar intake supports your gut lining.

  • Avoid highly processed foods: These often contain additives that may irritate your gut.

  • Limit alcohol: Alcohol stresses the gut wall and may increase permeability.

  • Manage stress: Stress can weaken the gut barrier; relaxation techniques or meditation can help.

  • Consider targeted supplements: Certain nutrients support regeneration and stabilization of the gut lining.

Vitamins & nutrients that build and support your intestinal mucosa

Glutamine: Fuel for Your Gut Cells

The cells of your intestinal lining renew every 3–5 days — a demanding process. Glutamine supplies the necessary “fuel,” enabling rapid regeneration. It also supports the function of tight junctions, modulates the immune system, and helps reduce inflammation in the gut.

Probiotics: for a strong microbiome

Probiotics are true all-rounders for your gut. They not only promote the growth of beneficial bacteria but also help strengthen the mucus layer and support the gut’s immune system. These "good" bacteria also produce butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid that serves as an energy source for the intestinal mucosa. Probiotics help balance your microbiome — supporting your daily well-being.

Vitamin A: regeneration support

Vitamin A is essential for all tissues that frequently regenerate — including the intestinal mucosa. It promotes rapid cell renewal and supports the integrity of tight junctions between gut cells.

Vitamin D: stability for the barrier

Vitamin D plays a key role in stabilizing the intestinal barrier and positively influences the gut microbiome. It helps maintain tight junctions and supports the gut’s immune defense.

Fiber: nutritional support for your gut

Dietary fiber is fermented by gut bacteria into short-chain fatty acids, which serve as fuel for intestinal mucosa cells. Adequate fiber intake is essential for maintaining a healthy barrier. Insufficient fiber may impair mucosal cell health and mucus production.

Polyphenols: natural protection

Polyphenols — like curcumin, resveratrol, and quercetin, primarily found in fruits and vegetables — offer multiple benefits for gut health. They support mucus production, improve tight junction function, and have antioxidant properties that protect gut cells. Recent studies show that polyphenol-rich diets may help prevent barrier dysfunction.

Zinc: inflammation support

Zinc helps stabilize the intestinal lining and is particularly important in chronic gut inflammation. Studies show that zinc contributes to maintaining barrier function.

Plant compounds: natural helpers

The plant kingdom offers numerous valuable ingredients for gut health. Licorice root, ginger, green tea, and shiitake mushrooms are just a few examples that may support intestinal function.

Tip for optimal support: probiotics & glutamine

Probiotics and glutamine complement each other perfectly, working synergistically to optimally support your intestinal lining.
