A tall shrub, striking yellow flowers and velvety leaves – Damiana immediately catches the eye with its highly distinctive appearance. But there is much more to it than that: this medicinal plant, native to Mexico and also known as Turnera diffusa, was already prized by the Maya for its healing and stimulating effects. Reason enough for us to tell you more about it – after all, it’s an ingredient in many BIOGENA products. In this blog post, you’ll therefore learn more about the effects of damiana on the body and mind, as well as its side effects and possible uses.

01

Damiana (Turnera diffusa) – what is it?

Damiana, known in Latin as Turnera diffusa, is a plant belonging to the safflower family that grows primarily in Central and South America. The Maya people in those regions used this shrub to alleviate infections and digestive problems, as well as to combat anxiety. Above all, however, damiana has always been regarded as an aphrodisiac. Both then and now, it is therefore used to treat erectile dysfunction and a reduced libido. The herb is usually used for this purpose; the flowers are less commonly employed. Due to its good tolerability, it is now becoming increasingly popular in Europe as well.

One herb, many benefits: The effects of damiana (Turnera diffusa) on the body and mind

Both the leaves and the flowers of damiana contain valuable constituents such as essential oils, flavonoids, tannins and bitter compounds, as well as trace elements. These can have both anti-inflammatory and anxiolytic effects, as well as mildly euphoric and stimulating effects. The most important areas of application and benefits of this medicinal plant therefore include:

  • To stimulate sexual desire: A specific effect of damiana from which both men and women benefit equally: damiana extracts have a regulating effect on testosterone levels and can therefore stimulate the libido. It is also said to intensify sexual arousal. Damiana can thus increase your fertility and support you if you are trying for a baby.

  • To promote emotional calm: Damiana also has a positive influence on mental well-being; it can lift your mood and thus dispel anxiety and worries. Damiana can also be helpful in cases of tiredness, sleep problems and other nervous disorders.

  • To support muscle weakness: Damiana is also used to strengthen the body and improve muscle strength and function.

  • To relieve inflammation and colds: Inflammation, particularly that affecting the bladder, is another area where damiana is used and effective, as the leaves have a mild laxative effect and help strengthen the bladder. Damiana is also often effective against colds and headaches.

  • To relieve period pain: An interesting benefit of damiana, particularly for women: especially when combined with clary sage, this medicinal plant can help with period pain.

However, damiana has still not been fully investigated – many aspects of its described effects are, to date, based solely on laboratory tests. Whilst some studies have now been carried out on animals and human tissue samples, suggesting potential efficacy, there is as yet no actual scientific evidence. Intensive research will therefore be required in this area over the coming years.

From extract to tea: how to take damiana to feel its effects

The leaves of the damiana plant are at the heart of almost all its health-related uses. For example, they are dried and made into tea. This has a mild, slightly sweet flavour with a subtle hint of bitterness. Extracts are also widely used. These are either made into drops and tinctures or processed further into capsules or tablets. Furthermore, the leaves of the plant can be vaporised so that their active ingredients can be inhaled. Alternatively, their relaxing and euphoric effects can be utilised for smoking in buildings.
