What effect does magnesium L-threonate have on mental and cognitive performance?
Magnesium L-threonate is a specific magnesium compound whose effects are being researched, particularly in relation to mental and cognitive performance. Initial human studies using the branded raw material Magtein® provide evidence of positive effects in areas such as memory, attention and learning ability. Furthermore, improvements in sleep quality and a reduced subjective perception of stress have been observed.
This makes magnesium L-threonate particularly appealing to people who face mental challenges in their daily lives and who wish to focus specifically on the brain, cognition and mental balance when taking magnesium supplements.

What is magnesium L-threonate?
Magnesium L-threonate has its origins in research: scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) developed this specialised magnesium compound with the aim of effectively increasing magnesium levels in the brain. To achieve this, they combined magnesium with L-threonic acid, a breakdown product of vitamin C metabolism. This research led to the development of the patented branded raw material Magtein®.
Preclinical studies demonstrate why this is of interest to researchers. In animal models, magnesium L-threonate (Magtein®) was shown to increase magnesium levels in the brain. The scientific focus here includes, amongst other things, processes relating to communication between nerve cells and synaptic plasticity.
Further research is building on these findings. The effects of magnesium L-threonate are now also being investigated in human studies, with a particular focus on mental and cognitive functions. A large proportion of these studies have been carried out using the patented branded raw material Magtein®.

What are the effects of magnesium L-threonate?
What do we know so far about the effects of magnesium L-threonate? Studies have focused primarily on sleep, as well as mental and cognitive performance. Research is investigating the effects this specific magnesium compound may have in these areas.
The starting point is the compound’s unique development: magnesium L-threonate was designed with the aim of effectively increasing magnesium levels in the brain. This has already been observed in animal models. Human studies are now examining various areas in greater detail:
Sleep: Studies provide evidence of improvements in certain sleep parameters and subjective sleep quality.
Cognition & memory: Research has observed positive changes in individual cognitive tests – including cognitive performance, memory and reaction time.
Age-related cognitive functions: Studies provide evidence of positive changes in individual cognitive functions in adults and older adults.
Nervous system & mental function: Regardless of the form of magnesium, it contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system and to normal mental function.
Magnesium L-threonate is thus emerging as a versatile area of research and application. Below, we take a closer look at what has been investigated so far regarding mental and cognitive performance. You can read more about the general functions of magnesium in our blog post ‘Magnesium – Effects, Daily Requirements & Uses’.

How does magnesium L-threonate affect mental performance?
Packed to-do lists, demanding projects or intensive study periods: when there is a lot going on mentally, concentration and stamina are particularly important. Research into the effects of magnesium L-threonate therefore also examines factors that may play a role during such periods – including sleep, daily well-being and subjective stress levels.
Clinical trials using the branded raw material Magtein® provide initial evidence that supplementation may be associated with improvements in sleep quality and general daily well-being.
Subjective stress perception was also investigated. In a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled human trial, scientists investigated the potential influence of Magtein® on subjective stress perception and other aspects of mental well-being. Following supplementation, participants reported lower levels of subjective stress.
The findings to date thus provide initial indications of correlations that are of interest to research into mental performance. At the same time, it should be noted that these represent an interim stage of the research and must be further explored through additional scientific studies.

How does magnesium L-threonate affect cognitive performance?
Remembering, learning, processing information, staying alert: cognitive performance is underpinned by a range of abilities that help us navigate everyday life. It is precisely these areas that are the focus of research into the effects of magnesium L-threonate.
Several human studies involving Magtein® have examined, amongst other things, memory, attention, learning ability and so-called executive functions. These include mental abilities that are important, for example, for planning, problem-solving, flexible thinking and the targeted control of attention and behaviour.
A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 100 adults provides a more detailed insight. Over a six-week period, the participants were given either Magtein® or a placebo. The Magtein® group showed greater improvements in their overall cognitive score.

Further studies report changes in reaction and processing speeds, as well as in general cognitive performance.
The findings to date thus provide initial insights whilst also highlighting further potential for research.
06
What do studies say about the effects of magnesium L-threonate?
Research to date on the effects of magnesium L-threonate has examined various aspects of sleep, mental and cognitive performance. But how can the body of research be assessed as a whole?
A significant proportion of the findings to date stems from studies using the patented branded raw material Magtein®. Several randomised, double-blind and placebo-controlled human studies provide evidence of positive effects in cognitive domains such as working memory, attention, concentration and processing speed. Changes in sleep quality, subjective stress levels and other aspects of psychological well-being have also been investigated.
These human studies are supplemented by preclinical data. In animal models, magnesium L-threonate has been shown to increase magnesium levels in the brain. Research is focusing, amongst other things, on processes that play a role in communication between nerve cells, as well as in learning and memory.
The overall picture is promising, but not yet complete. Further research is needed to substantiate, deepen and better contextualise the findings to date.

Conclusion: What is known about the effects of magnesium L-threonate?
Magnesium L-threonate is bringing a breath of fresh air to magnesium research. The focus is primarily on mental and cognitive performance. Human studies with Magtein® show positive effects on memory, attention, learning ability and other cognitive functions. Improvements in sleep quality and a reduced subjective perception of stress have also been observed.
Magnesium L-threonate combines the latest research findings with the already established functions of magnesium: this mineral contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system and mental well-being, as well as to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
This makes magnesium L-threonate particularly beneficial for people who think a lot, achieve a lot and shoulder a lot of responsibility – whether at work, at university or within the family – and who wish to tailor their magnesium intake specifically to support mental performance and balance.
