Packaging made with sugarcane-based plastic
Our BIOGENA-bottle
It’s not just the contents that count. We also pay close attention to our packaging: we use bio-based polyethylene for the bodies and lids of our tins. Its plant-based raw material: renewable sugarcane. Find out here what’s behind it and how to dispose of the empty tin properly.

Innovation
Familiar plastic. Different raw material.
Our bottle looks like conventional plastic packaging. The difference lies in the raw material: ethanol derived from sugarcane is used to produce the HDPE we use. This is turned into polyethylene, a plastic that is also used for many other types of packaging. The BIOGENA can is therefore an innovative packaging solution that has the same technical properties as its fossil-based counterpart, but is produced from plant-based materials.
Good to know: As it grows, sugarcane absorbs CO₂ from the atmosphere. The manufacturer’s life cycle analysis shows a CO₂ footprint of –2.12 kg CO₂e per kilogram of plastic for the bio-based HDPE used.*
*Reference framework: Production of the plastic raw material in Brazil up to the factory gate.
From sugar cane to the bottle
The journey begins with sugar cane: Ethanol is extracted from it.
Ethanol becomes plastic: The ethanol is first converted into ethylene. This basic building block is then processed into polyethylene – PE for short.
The plastic takes shape: Our can manufacturer then uses the bio-based PE to produce our can bodies and screw-on lids.
What makes it special is the origin of the raw material: According to the manufacturer, the bio-based PE used has the same chemical structure as its fossil-based polyethylene counterpart. It can therefore also be processed in the same PE recycling streams.
‘Bio-based’ describes the source of the raw material. In the case of the bio-based PE we use, sugar cane provides the plant-based raw material. The finished packaging is therefore a plastic and does not consist of compressed plant fibres.

Designed for every day
When designing our bottle, the focus is on product protection and everyday use. Feedback from our customers has been incorporated into the redesign. With the latest design change, we have also prevented damage to the break line, which occasionally occurred with older formats. Our aim: packaging that fits seamlessly into everyday life.
Lightweight: The white 170-ml bottle body, for example, weighs around 14 grams – without the lid or label
Resealable: The screw-on lid allows the bottle to be resealed after use
With a textured grip surface: The grooves on the lid provide a secure grip for your fingers when opening and closing
Bottle empty? Dispose of it correctly.
Place the completely empty bottle and lid in the plastic recycling bins provided in your country. Please follow local recycling guidelines; different regulations may apply in different countries.
According to the manufacturer, the bio-based PE used can be processed in the same recycling streams as conventional polyethylene. Correct collection is an important first step in this process.
