NADH is present in every living cell of animals, humans and plants and is contained in many foods, especially animal products. Especially organs with a high energy demand, such as the heart, brain or muscles, have higher concentrations.

The abbreviation NADH stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide in its reduced form, the H at the end thus stands for hydrogen. The body's own coenzyme is produced via the vitamin niacin. It has been known since 1906, when it was first identified by Arthur Harden and William Young. NADH is also often referred to as coenzyme 1.
