Cordyceps

Cordyceps sinensis, also known as the Chinese caterpillar mushroom, is a remarkable vital mushroom used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

Originally located in the highlands of Tibet, the mushroom has made a name for itself with its unique life cycle and versatile applications in the Western world. In this blog you will learn all about the different effects of this extraordinary fungi and how it can support your health.

What is Cordyceps?

Cordyceps sinensis is a vital fungus that originally grew parasitically on caterpillars in the highlands of Tibet. The fungus has a fascinating life cycle:

  • In winter, it lives inside the caterpillar and survives as a parasite until only the animal’s mummified shell is left.
  • In spring and summer, the fungus then grows out of the former caterpillar's head into the earth in a finger-shaped manner.

Due to its rarity and protected status, cultivated mycelium is now mostly used, which is obtained through a fermentation and standardisation process and is particularly suitable for therapeutic use. Thus, the full effect of cordyceps can be used for nutritional supplements without the need to collect the rare fungus in the wild. The Cordyceps capsules from BIOGENA are therefore also completely vegan.

Cordyceps mushroom ingredients

Cordyceps mushroom is rich in bioactive ingredients that give it its varied health benefits. The most important components include polysaccharides, which are known for their immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. These carbohydrates support the immune system by increasing the activity of macrophages and other immune cells. Another important active substance is the nucleoside cordycepine, which has strong antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects and is widely regarded in research due to its potential inhibitory properties on tumour cell growth in in vitro studies. Cordyceps also contains sterols, which can contribute to the maintenance of a healthy cholesterol level, as well as proteins and essential amino acids, which are important for overall cell health. This unique combination of ingredients makes the cordyceps mushroom a powerful natural remedy to promote health.

Cordyceps effect: Vital fungus for our health

The ingredients listed make Cordyceps a versatile natural medicine that is often used as a complementary therapeutic measure. Cordyceps has a comprehensive spectrum of effects, especially in traditional Chinese medicine.

Cordyceps and its effect on the immune system

Basic studies show that Cordyceps strengthens the immune response of the body. For this reason, caterpillar fungi are traditionally used to support the immune system, especially in times of increased stress or a weakened immune defence system.

Cordyceps for improved lung function during exercise

Cordyceps is often used by athletes to improve performance and reduce tiredness and weakness. The fungus increases the maximum oxygen uptake and the anaerobic threshold, which is particularly interesting for endurance athletes. Studies have shown that cordyceps can promote fat mobilisation and beta oxidation, thereby protecting glycogen reserves. This is thought to lead to improved endurance and regeneration.

Good to know! Cordycepts is not on the doping list of the National Antidoping Agency NADA. The mushroom is considered a natural aid and is allowed in sport. Sportsmen and women can therefore take it safely.

Cordyceps and its effect on the mind

In addition to physical benefits, Cordyceps also shows positive effects on the mind. The fungus can reduce feelings of stress and increase general resilience. In animal models, Cordyceps has been found to stimulate the production of corticosteroids, improving stress resistance and contributing to overall psychological stability.

Cordyceps as protection against free radicals

Cordyceps is rich in antioxidants that help neutralise the free radicals in the body. This antioxidant effect contributes to the protection of cells and can reduce the risk of chronic diseases caused by oxidative stress.

Cordyceps for more testosterone and libido

Cordyceps is often used as a natural agent to increase the libido and testosterone levels. Traditionally, the fungus is considered to be a potentiator and modern basic studies support this use by suggesting an increase in testosterone production and an improvement in sexual performance.

Cordyceps to regulate blood pressure and cholesterol levels

The caterpillar fungus also has positive effects on the cardiovascular system by contributing to lowering blood pressure and helping to regulate cholesterol levels. These properties make Cordyceps a valuable companion in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

Does the caterpillar fungus have side effects?

Despite its numerous benefits, the recommended use of Cordyceps should always be taken into account. Side effects are rare, but caution is advised, especially in the case of an allergy to fungi, mould or penicillin. Sensitive people may suffer from mild digestive problems after the first intake. Otherwise, taking the mushroom entails hardly any risks.

Possible uses of the Cordyceps mushroom

Cordyceps is an extremely versatile medical fungus, the application of which goes far beyond the traditional support of the immune system. In modern naturopathy, Cordyceps is used to increase physical performance, especially in athletes and persons with chronic fatigue. The fungus promotes oxygen uptake and fat burning, which improves endurance and accelerates post-workout recovery. Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties also make it valuable in preventive and support therapies for chronic diseases such as cardiovascular problems. Other possible uses include regulating the blood sugar and cholesterol levels and improving stress resistance, which makes the fungus a true all-rounder in mycotherapy.

Taking Cordyceps: How much should you take per day?

The recommended daily dose of Cordyceps may vary depending on the specific product and individual needs, but the standard dose is approximately 1,200 mg Cordyceps powder per day. As a rule, this is taken in the form of capsules, whereby the intake is ideally divided into several doses throughout the day. For optimal effect, it is recommended to take Cordyceps capsules with plenty of liquid with meals
