Magnesium takes the wind out of the sails of high blood pressure

High blood pressure (hypertension) is widespread. Nevertheless, many people only learn about their disease by chance. High blood pressure is not painful. Just the opposite! Many sufferers even feel full of energy and fit. Nonetheless, the silent danger is a daily burden on the heart and vessels. It is therefore all the more important to take the wind out of the sails of increased vascular pressure. In this context, the health media repeatedly stumble across the mineral substance magnesium. Studies have shown that a magnesium deficiency can contribute to high blood pressure. But does the mineral also have the power to fight against increased vascular pressure? Let us throw some light on the matter.

Magnesium – a brief profile of the mineral

Magnesium is indispensable for us humans. It is not just our nerves and muscles that need the essential electrolyte, but the power substance is also in demand in our energy metabolism. Magnesium is an important training partner for people who actively enjoy sports. However, people suffering from stress also benefit from having an adequate magnesium supply. Because the anti-stress mineral inhibits the release of stress hormones and also reduces the effect of adrenaline and noradrenaline. Magnesium plays another important role in terms of bones and teeth. In terms of quantity, it is considered the second most common mineral and contributes to the build-up and stability of our bones and teeth.

The role magnesium plays in our organisms should not be underestimated. As an activator of more than 300 enzymes, this mineral is involved in numerous metabolic processes, and even in the immune system, free magnesium ions play a role as secondary messenger substances.

Magnesium protects the heart and circulation

A good magnesium supply should therefore be close to our hearts. And that in the truest sense of the word! Because magnesium contributes to the health of our cardiovascular system. The electrolyte supports the blood sugar and insulin metabolism as well as the excitability and the energy balance of the heart. In addition, the mineral in the vessel walls acts as a mild calcium blocker and thus affects blood pressure.

Meta-analysis: Magnesium is good for blood pressure

So if magnesium plays an active role in our blood vessels from a physiological point of view, is the mineral substance beneficial when it comes to high blood pressure? This question was asked in an overview paper (meta-analysis), which was published in 2016. In this study, the data from 34 studies was evaluated. Magnesium supplementation has been shown to significantly reduce the systolic and diastolic blood pressure of adults with normal and elevated blood pressure. The blood pressure reduction was also accompanied by elevated serum magnesium levels. According to these results, magnesium has a favorable effect on blood pressure – both as a preventive measure and with existing high blood pressure.

High blood pressure: Other important nutrient partners

Additional nutritional support can also be obtained in the form of other well-known vital substances. Potassium is not only an important partner of magnesium in our bodies, but according to meta-analyses, the electrolyte also reduces blood pressure. In Mother Nature’s treasure chest, you can also find other gems that reduce high blood pressure. These include black cumin, green tea, and lycopene. While the blood pressure-modulating effect of black caraway is mainly due to the oils contained therein, studies found that “waiting and drinking green tea” is not only a form of relaxation but also has a “healthy” effect on reducing blood pressure. It’s the color of lycopene that’s the giveaway. According to studies, the red plant dye improves the function of the blood vessels and keeps blood pressure stable.
