How can I improve my iron absorption?

The combination of iron-rich foods – so-called “iron boosters” – can improve iron absorption into the body. Iron boosters are foods that contain vitamin C, vitamin A, fruit acids, lactic acids or sulphur-containing amino acids.

Which foods strengthen the connective tissue?

Foods with sufficient proteins and a high vegetable content. In particular, varieties rich in vitamin C, such as peppers and tomatoes, should be on the menu. Citrus fruits also contain a good amount of this vitamin.

What is the trigger for osteoporosis?

In the development of osteoporosis, age, familial tendency and an oestrogen deficiency in menopause play a role, among other things. Certain diseases (e.g., such as hyperthyroidism) or medications (especially cortisone) can also lead to so-called “secondary osteoporosis”. Other risk factors that promote early onset or severe manifestation include lack of exercise, vitamin D and/or calcium deficiency, eating disorders (anorexia) and excessive alcohol or nicotine consumption.

Which iron type does the body absorb best?

The best way for our body to absorb iron is by using heme iron, which makes up about half of the iron contained in meat and fish. However, plant-based iron or iron salts are also effective, especially if there is already an under-supply and the body increases the absorption accordingly – the combination with vitamin C is ideal here to increase the absorption of iron and a moderate dosage.

What increases testosterone the most?

Testosterone replacement therapy replaces the lack of testosterone and is thus the most effective form to increase testosterone levels – like all drug therapies, this therapy does, however, have some side effects and is therefore only used for special, medically clarified indications. Those who prefer a natural remedy and who are patient can increase testosterone production through exercise, a healthy diet, a solid lifestyle, normalisation of body weight and special supplements (e.g. zinc, vitamin D, Ashwagandha).

How do I get enough iron?

To cover your daily iron requirement, you should include iron-rich foods such as red meat, legumes (e.g. lentils and beans), wholemeal products, green leafy vegetables (e.g. spinach) and nuts in your diet. Foods containing vitamin C, such as paprika or oranges, can also help to improve iron absorption. If you have difficulty absorbing enough iron from food, have increased needs, or are a vegetarian, you can also consider food supplements such as iron capsules to meet your daily needs.

Do I need supplements if I eat a balanced and healthy diet?

It is true that a balanced and healthy diet supplies us with nearly all the micronutrients, vitamins and minerals that we need. However, some people in special situations in life have a greater need for micronutrients, such as, for example, athletes, young people in growth phases, pregnant women, but also people who cannot eat some foods (intolerances) or do not wish to do so (e.g. vegetarians). For them, it is very difficult to get their required daily supply via their diet alone. Pregnant women, for example, need more folic acid and the omega-3 fatty acid DHA – in amounts that are difficult to get via a normal, balanced diet. Vegetarians can have difficulties covering their need of vitamin B12. People suffering from lactose intolerance often have a lack of calcium.

Is folic acid good for your hair?

Yes, folic acid can be good for your hair. This is because the vitamin plays an important role in cell division and regeneration of hair cells, which is essential for healthy hair growth and strengthening existing hair follicles. A lack of folic acid can lead to thin, brittle hair and hair loss. Folic acid also plays an essential role in the synthesis of keratin, a protein that strengthens hair and gives it shine. Because a healthy scalp and robust hair are the best conditions for counteracting hair loss, folic acid can also help with this problem. In addition, folic acid stimulates the cells responsible for the production of melanin. This means that you can sometimes prevent premature greying.
