In its natural L-form, lysine is an essential amino acid that is used in the human body for protein synthesis. As a protein component, the amino acid is involved in important metabolic processes in addition to building tissue and muscles. However, the body cannot produce L-lysine itself, so the amino acid must be taken in with food. Lysine is mainly found in animal foods, milk, eggs and fish. With the exception of pulses, vegetables tend to contain smaller amounts, and cereals usually contain less lysine than would be optimal for human nutrition.
Due to the low occurrence in plant-based foods, people at risk of an inadequate intake of L-lysine include, in particular, people who have been on a strict vegan diet for a long time or people with an increased consumption of the amino acid, for example active athletes.
BIOGENA L-Lysin 500 is a completely vegan preparation that is obtained by microbial fermentation of maize and is therefore free from animal components. Genetic engineering is not used in the production of the raw material, and encapsulation in our own production facility in Salzburgerland, Austria, means that we can also guarantee production according to the pure substance principle. Regular, independent laboratory tests also ensure the high quality. Just like naturally occurring lysine in proteins, BIOGENA L-Lysin 500 contains the bioidentical L-form and therefore provides an ideal option for daily supplementation.

What makes our L-Lysine 500 special?
BIOGENA L-Lysine 500 is derived entirely GMO-free through the fermentation of maize. Our in-house production facility in Salzburg guarantees the highest quality and purity thanks to our unique manufacturing standard. This results in L-lysine of the highest quality with a purity of over 99.5%. Naturally, we do not use any animal ingredients in the production of L-Lysine 500, so the product is 100% vegan and our L-lysine is therefore based on purely plant-based, renewable raw materials.
L-lysine as an amino acid counterpart to arginine
The L-lysine amino acid is the "antagonist" of L-arginine in the body through a shared cell transporter - a system that needs to remain in balance but occasionally falls out of balance, for example due to stress or poor nutrition. As arginine is a nutrient of the herpes viruses, an excess of the amino acid accelerates the spread of the viruses. As a counterpart, L-lysine can inhibit the uptake of arginine into the cells. This enables the body to convert the freely available arginine into useful nitric oxide rapidly when required. A good supply of L-lysine therefore supports the natural prevention of herpes, while an increased supply of L-lysine ensures rapid wound healing after the outbreak of cold sores or fever blisters.

FAQ
At Biogena, “pure substance principle” means that we do not use technological additives which are used for the fully automated manufacturing of tablets, capsules and pills (e.g. anticaking or release agents and so forth) or additives that are used for optical reasons or for enhancing the taste of the products (artificial aroma, colouring agents, coatings etc.). Due to a semi-automatic manufacturing process, we can avoid these substances that often have a higher proportion in customary products than the actual active ingredients. In the case of nutritional supplements, additives have to be indicated in the list of ingredients. Here, the patient or customer can get useful information. Concerning the single ingredients, we also care for our raw materials to be free of carrier substances. In cases where this is not possible, we use natural food components such as maltodextrin, cellulose powder or calcium carbonate. The majority of our ingredients is produced exclusively for us – free of carrier substances (e.g. our enzymes our probiotics: other manufacturers often use lactose as a carrier – the product batches produced for us are explicitly without carriers).
